Sep 5 - Sep 7 Operation Christmas Child Kick Off
It's time to kick off Operation Christmas Child in the South Arkansas Area. Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan's Purse. Shoe boxes are filled with school supplies, toys, necessity items and a note of encouragement for a child overseas suffering due to disaster, disease, war, terrorism, famine or poverty. Kick-Off weekend is September 5-7 in the South Arkansas Area. We have the privilege of hosting Livia Satterfield, a full circle story. Livia lived in a Romanian orphanage. In sharp contrast to the lack of love and care from the orphanage attendants and fellow orphans, she vividly remembers the change, through a simple shoe box gift, that came into her life at the age of 12. Five years after, Livia was adopted by a family in Georgia. Since 2005 Livia has been promoting Operation Christmas Child, and in 2010 she traveled back to Romania to share the love of Jesus with children in Romanian orphanages and poor villages through a shoebox. While in our area, Livia will be speaking in several schools, churches and at the Camp Fire House in El Dorado. She will also be sharing her story at the Shoe Box Summit for the South Arkansas Area, Sunday, September 7th at 2 pm. The Summit will be held at the Area Collection Center located at Immanuel Baptist Church, 701 South West Ave. in El Dorado. Livia?s schedule is listed below; please feel free to attend any or all of the events. For more information about the weekend schedule call 870-862-4264. 2014 National Collection Week for Operation Christmas Child is November 17-24. The goal for the South Arkansas Area is 53,000 shoe box gifts. Please join the global effort to send shoe box gifts to 10 million children in more than 150 countries. For more information contact the Area Collection Center in El Dorado at 870-862-4264 or go to www.samaritanspurse.org. Sep 6 - Oct 31 Keep El Dorado Beautiful Great Fall Clean Up
The Keep El Dorado Beautiful Great Fall Clean Up is part of the Great Arkansas Clean Up sponsored by Keep Arkansas Beautiful. Each Fall, thousands of Arkansans remove tons of trash from our state's roadways, shorelines, parks and public areas during the Great Arkansas Cleanup, the statewide community-improvement campaign. Communities large and small show their commitment to the Great Arkansas Cleanup campaign by recruiting volunteers of all ages and taking on a variety of community clean up and environmental-improvement projects. In the 2013 Great Arkansas Cleanup, over 24,000 Arkansans were involved in more than 130 events. Through their efforts, litter was picked up from 729 miles of roadway, 4,279 parks and public areas, and 588 miles of shoreline; and 56 illegal dumps were closed. The Great Arkansas Cleanup began more than 40 years ago as the Greers Ferry Lake and Little Red River Cleanup. In 1985, then-U.S. Sen. Dale Bumpers guided legislation requiring an annual pickup event during the weekend after Labor Day on all federal lands. This law, the Carl Garner Federal Lands Cleanup Act, honors the founder of the event. Mr. Garner continued his advocacy for a clean and litter-free environment as a member of the Keep Arkansas Beautiful Foundation Board of Directors for many years. To organize or volunteer for a Great Arkansas Cleanup event in your community, call (501)682-3507, or fill out the volunteer form on www.keeparkansasbeautiful.com.

Sep 20 United Way of Union County's Community Campaign Kick Off & Dachshund Dash
You would certainly expect to see kids running around the ball fields at the Boys & Girls Club, but wiener dogs? The Fifth Annual Dachshund Dash is just part of the United Way of Union County's Community Campaign Kick Off from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 20, at the Boys & Girls Club. The kick off is an element of the United Way's campaign, which annually raises thousands of dollars through individual gifts and workplace campaigns to support programs and services provided by 14 local non-profit agencies. For $1 admission, the community can enjoy many games and activities.

"All activities are sponsored by United Way's partner agencies, which will also be on hand to distribute information and discuss the services they provide" said Alexander.

The kick off will also feature the fifth annual Dachshund Dash, El Dorado's premier wiener dog race. The race starts at 11:00 a.m. and a pre-race parade will be held at 10:30 a.m. Participants are encouraged to dress their pets for the parade. Entry fee for the race is $10 per dog and proof of current vaccinations must be provided with registration. Concessions will also be available for sale.

"The United Way of Union County is one of the community's strongest organizations," said Alexander. "Its member agencies served more than 30,000 residents last year and continue to work toward enhancing the quality of life in Union County."

United Way of Union County partner agencies include: American Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, Boys & Girls Club, Camp Fire USA, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), Community Living Arrangements, Girl Scouts, HOPE Landing, Literacy Council, Salvation Army, Single Parent Scholarship Fund, South Arkansas Developmental Center for Children & Families, South Arkansas Fights AIDS, and Turning Point.

For more information on the kick off or to register for the Dachshund Dash, contact the United Way at (870) 862-4903.
