Mayhaw 101 Clinic
We feel this is a great public service trying to educate everyone on the care and upkeep of a mayhaw orchard with all the different speakers we have coming to the Eldorado Conference center for our program. Our cooking contest is really starting to garner a lot of interest for the $250 / $100 / $50 top prizes for the best mayhaw recipe and after the judging is over everyone is invited to sample all the entrees, also they have some really nice door prizes. There will be coffee and mayhaw jelly/ biscuits in the morning followed by our guest speakers and then the cooking contest and break for sampling. The Eldorado trolley will be scuttling everyone from their motels to the conference center and then out to Paul's Mayhaw orchard for an orchard tour guided by Robin Bridges from the Union County Extension service and Rafash Brew from the Union Parish Extension service from Monroe La. There they will be treated to free samples of mayhaw wine and homemade mayhaw ice cream, there will be limited grafted mayhaw trees for sale also. Following that the park superintendent (Paul Butler) at Moro Bay State Park is giving guided boat tours to see mayhaws in the wild on the Ouachita river. But one of the biggest attractions is the Mayhaw themed 4 course meal to be served with free samples of mayhaw wine at Fayray's restaurant on the downtown square Friday night (March 20th) after the Vince Gill concert (March 19), (which I hear is sold out ) and that response has been overwhelming but this is a 1st come 1st served / no reservations. The Eldorado A & P commission has given us $3000.00 to help advertise with-in a 100 mile radius and we have several great sponsors who have taken us under their wing putting forth much faith in helping make this a success this year.
