May 3 Thursday Night Live: Charlie Crockett
Every Thursday night, the Griffin restaurant presents FREE live music across the genres of R&B, acoustic, rock, bluegrass and country. Check out Thursday Night Live - because "we don't want to change the world, just show it a good time!" Growing up with a single mother in San Benito, Texas, the hometown of Tejano star Freddy Fender was not easy for blues singer Charley Crockett. Hitchhiking across the country exposed Crockett to the street life at a young age, following in the footsteps of his relative, American folk hero Davy Crockett, who also lived a wild life on the American frontier. After train hopping across the country, singing on the streets for change in New Orleans’ French Quarter, busking in New York City and performing across Texas and Northern California, Crockett set off to travel the world and lived on the streets of Paris for nearly a year before searching for home in Spain, Morocco, and Northern Africa. The blues artist returned home to Texas and released his debut solo album titled A Stolen Jewel in 2015, receiving critical acclaim in Dallas and ultimately landing him a Dallas Observer Music Award that year for “Best Blues Act”. A record “rich with Southern flavor, a musical gumbo of Delta blues, honky-tonk, gospel and Cajun jazz,” Jewel proved that Crockett, born into poverty in the Rio Grande, had come home to make his musical mark on the South. Crockett, who is self-described as elusive, rebellious and self-taught, has been compared to legends like Bill Withers, Merle Haggard, and Gary Clark Jr. He released his sophomore record In The Night, an admirable nod to his Texas country and Louisiana blues roots, on June 4 and ended 2016 having played over 125 shows. “In the Night” and Crockett’s song “I Am Not Afraid” received international recognition from top tastemakers after being picked by NPR Music as one of the "Top 10 Songs Public Radio Can't Stop Playing” and selected by David Dye to be featured on World Cafe in late July. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram called it “an impressive calling card, full of Crockett's plaintive soulfulness and swinging tempos" and Central Track noted the artist as having "the well-rounded songwriting capabilities of Van Morrison and a vocal approach that finds common ground between Bill Withers and early Dr. John." Crockett graced the cover of Buddy Magazine in May 2016, who called him “the archetype of the new American vagabond.” He has shared the stage with artists like Justin Townes Earle, Citizen Cope, Alejandro Escovedo, Joe Ely, Sean Hayes, Tab Benoit, Ace Enders, and Leon Bridges.

May 5 Mayhaw Festival
The South Arkansas Historical Preservation Society, Inc. is pleased to present the 26th Anniversary celebration of a humble little berry and a touch of South Arkansas history during the 2018 Annual Mayhaw Festival, sponsored by First Financial Bank, El Dorado Chemical and the City of El Dorado held on Saturday May 5. Each year this festival gets off to a running start with the Murphy USA Mayhawlin' 5K and 10K runs. Start the festival out right by taking a bite out of the “guest of honor” during the Mayhaw Jelly Biscuit Breakfast, beginning shortly after the Mayhawlin 5K/10K Run, then enjoy a day of Newton House Museum tours, live music, a vintage market of hand-crafted, homemade goods created by artisan vendors, lawn & garden vendors, quality food vendors, and the “Park & Shine” antique car and bike show. As always there will be a “Kid’s Jam” play area with lots of activities such as: rock climbing, face painting, bounce houses, rope making, an art contest, a petting zoo, train and carriage rides plus much more! Don’t forget to pick up a jar or two of that truly Southern treat, Mayhaw Jelly. Each hand-crafted batch of jelly is made from scratch, using locally sourced fruit and a traditional recipe passed down through generations, and created in the kitchen of the Newton House Museum.

May 24 Thursday Night Live: The Legendary Pacers
Every Thursday night, the Griffin restaurant presents FREE live music across the genres of R&B, acoustic, rock, bluegrass and country. Check out Thursday Night Live - because "we don't want to change the world, just show it a good time!" The band was formed in 1955 at Newport, Arkansas. They had five singles on SUN Records: "Red Headed Woman" b/ "We Wanna Boogie", "Thunderbird", "Ain't Got a Thing", "Buckets Got a Hole In It", and "Sadies Back In Town". They also had a hit in 1965 on Razorback Records with "The Short Squashed Texan". "Red Headed Woman and We Wanna Boogie" has been voted the wildest record ever recorded. Sonny and the Pacers played clubs, festivals, shows, and colleges all over the US and Canada. They were one of the pioneers of rock and roll and traveled with Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, Danny and the Juniors, Conway Twitty, Patsy Cline, Ronnie Hawkins, Billy Lee Riley, Ace Cannon, Charlie Rich, Teddy Riedell, Narvel Felts, and many more. Several years ago the band reformed to record "They Came From the South" and now have another great CD out called "Still Rockin' and Rollin". The CD has received rave reviews and in June of 2000 was voted best new album in the country and roots field in Europe. Both CD's feature Sonny Burgess, Bobby Crafford, Jim Aldridge, Fred Douglas, Kern Kennedy, and J.C. Caughron. Charles Watson II plays fiddle on the "Still Rockin' and Rollin'" album. They play the music of the 50's the best because they helped invent it!

May 31 Art Reception at SAAC for Mike Means & Improv Comedy Night
SAAC invites you to an artist's reception to honor El Dorado artist Mike Means on Thursday, May 31st at 6:00pm . As an added bonus, "Gimme A Second" Improv group will close out the night with free performance on stage at 7pm. Tips will be accepted which will go to the scholarships so kids who may not normally spend time at a SAAC camp summer, can experience the FUN!

This will be a closing reception for Means' exhibit entitled "Back to Basics", which hangs in the Lobby Gallery through May 31. Mike Means is happy to get back to the basics of drawing with what he calls ‘mostly pencil art’. Pencil and colored pencil have always been his favorite media, hence the name “Back to Basics”. Means says that this show is a form of improvisation. He started with one element that interested him and then improvised by adding something that would be humorous or thought provoking in some way, just like when performing improv on stage.

"I also spend many fun hours in a local Improv Group that was originally started by Shelton Hardin and now has 6 individuals that love making people laugh! So, the second half of my reception at the end of the month will be a free IMPROV show in the theater," said Means. GAS members are Bill Meyer, Charley Hankins, Luke Ramsey, Chris Stone, Brooke Burger and Mike Means.
