Mar 7 Frenchie's Blues Destroyers
On a Sunday morning in July 2001, a 20-year-old Kevin “Frenchie” Sciou was sleeping on the couch in the living room of an Arizona home when he was awakened by Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter singing “Storms Never Last.” Not on record, in the flesh, just a few feet away, with Jessi on the grand piano! The parents of Frenchie’s then-bandleader Shooter Jennings were gently stirring a house full of late-night partiers- and then Jessi made breakfast for their guests. “It was surreal,” says Frenchie, who also got to take a photo of himself sitting on Buddy Holly’s 1958 Ariel Cyclone motorcycle, which the Crickets had given to Waylon on his 40th birthday. “Just two months earlier, I was in L.A. with a backpack and two hundred bucks, answering ads for ‘guitar player wanted.’” After a late night jam session in L.A., Frenchie was approached by Shooter’s drummer Lex Lipsitz, a native of Waco, Texas. Their hard rock band Stargunn needed a guitarist just like him, so Frenchie went down to their rehearsal space at the corner of Hollywood and Vine to audition on the spot. “After about 15 minutes, Shooter asked me where I lived and I told him it was at a youth hostel a few blocks away. He said, ‘Nah, you’re living with us at the band house from now on’ and they took me down to get my stuff.” Things were happening fast for the hotshot southpaw guitarist from Nimes, France, who funded his move to the States by selling a Gibson Les Paul Custom guitar. But you can’t really play the blues until you’ve paid some dues and for Frenchie it’s been a rough and tumble 20 years from when he was a 17-year-old high school dropout jamming with blues legend Lucky Peterson at a French festival to the Nov. 9, 2018, release of Love Is Blood by his Frenchie’s Blues Destroyers duo with drummer Brother Pete Coatney. “I’ve always been a guitar player for hire, this was my trade” says Frenchie, who got the nom de plume from singers who couldn’t always remember his name. “So to sing the songs I wrote is a big thrill. But in the beginning it was a little scary.” It was Brother Pete, his mate in Jack Ingram’s touring band, who encouraged Frenchie’s move to front and center. Brother Pete loved the tunes the guitarist had been writing on the road, so he booked the first Blues Destroyers show at Adair’s Saloon in Dallas in 2012. “I figured it could go either way,” says Frenchie. “If it didn’t go over well, that could’ve been the end of it. But if the crowd dug it, we might have something, you know? We haven’t stopped since.” The duo, whose “Destroyers” tag is borne from their personal slant on vintage blues, British Invasion and classic rock, put together a CD calling card to get more gigs. But they consider Love Is Blood, produced by Taylor Tatsch (Maren Morris) at his AudioStyles studio in Dripping Springs, Texas, as their true debut album. “Being a two piece band shapes the way we approach the (roots rock) idiom,” says Brother Pete a native Texan, whose resume includes stints with Junior Brown and Billy Joe Shaver. On such originals as the T-Rex inspired lead-off track “Little Bit Crazy” and the road ode “Behind the Wheel,” FBD play off each other to deliver a swinging, snarling, bone-rattling sound that salutes melody with its Beatlesesque chord changes. Two-piece rock bands are not new, but the Blues Destroyers approach is distinctive. “We are an example of two very differently raised yet very similar individuals,” says Brother Pete of Fort Worth, a man who grew up on Christian tradition, while the tattooed-up, wild French man is based out of Austin. “Our world views and our values may vary in certain circumstances, but we agree on most things.” Although there’s a significant age difference, they share a unified musical vision. Credit the extensive record collection of Guy Sciou, a printer by trade, with giving his son Kevin an introduction to the ’60s bands — from the Animals and the Yardbirds, to the Doors, the Kinks, Humble Pie, Rolling Stones and many more — that are part of his musical DNA. One song in particular, “Black Cat Moan,” with it’s nine minutes of trickery and mastery by Jeff Beck, had Frenchie asking his folks for a guitar at age 12. By 13 he was playing local bars in Southern France. “I grew up on American music — rock ’n’ roll and blues — but back when I was playing in France I felt somewhat like a copycat,” Frenchie says. “But as soon as I landed in the U.S. I felt at home, because this was where the music I loved was born.” But there was a continuous worry in the back of his mind. “When I played for Shooter the first time and he asked me to be in Stargunn, I had to tell him that I had to get my legal situation straightened out as I only had a tourist visa.” Waylon Jennings stepped in and wrote the Immigration and Naturalization Services to vouch for Frenchie’s character and musical ability, so the guitarist eventually got a work permit, which had to be renewed yearly at first. (Waylon also wrote to Frenchie’s parents to assure them he was in good hands and doing well.) After Stargunn broke up, Frenchie had to hustle gigs to keep his permit. “There were some jobs I would’ve turned down, but I had to keep working constantly. There was no down time.” A gig with Wade Bowen brought Frenchie to Texas in 2003. Four years later, he replaced Chris Masterson in Jack Ingram’s band and started writing his own songs on the side. “Jack’s approach to songwriting was really influential. I’d see him constantly toying with song ideas and he turned me onto folks like Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. But Billy Joe Shaver is my all-time favorite. I knew about him through the Waylon connection and I’ve played with him a few times over the years. Billy Joe said the hardest thing about finishing a song is that you don’t get to play around with it anymore. I get that. It’s like a cat playing with a mouse before the kill.” Although he’s played with many greats and co-founded the Redneck Social Club collective (co-writing Colt Ford’s hit “DWI: Dancing While Intoxicated” from the #1 country album Declaration of Independence) in Nashville, Frenchie says “the highlight of my musical career was becoming a U.S. citizen” in August of 2016. “I have followed an uncommon path, never been married nor held a regular job, so becoming an American citizen solely based on my musical merits was the greatest day of my life.” It was something he’d dreamt of ever since he jumped onstage with Lucky Peterson back in his home country and drew wild applause. “To play with an all-star American blues band as a young French man and hold my own meant everything to me at the time. I knew there and then I had something.” The next year when Lucky came through town, he remembered Frenchie and asked, “Did you bring your guitar?” America has inspired Kevin “Frenchie” Sciou to follow his path. From his humble beginnings to today’s adventures, make no mistake … Frenchie’s Blues Destroyers is an all American band!

Mar 14 MONTY RUSSELL W/ DAVE P. MOORE
Monty Russell sports an unintentional $1000 beard he began growing in 2010 after a friend bet him he wouldn’t go a year without shaving or trimming. Having won the bet, Monty collected 1k in one dollar bills in a brand new alligator briefcase while playing at his friend’s birthday party. After friends consigned a bearded Russell logo for t-shirts at the party, the beard became a lasting fixture. A singer, songwriter, playwright, sometimes professor, Americana radio personality, music and event producer and concert promoter, and former police off icer based in Ruston, Northern Louisiana, Monty is currently touring to promote his latest recording, “Fat Man,” co-produced with James Cook. The title track is derived from the autobiography of the great Louis Armstrong, who frequently remarked “I aint never gon’ be a rich man, but I’m always gon’ be a fat man.” The 11 songs comprising “Fat Man” explore the world that presents itself in a never ending play in Russell’s head, orchestrated by a group of friends he has collected along his musical path. He is joined on the record by fellow Louisianans James Cook (Luke Bryan, The Levees), who played bass and horns, sang, co-wrote, co-produced, and engineered; Dan Cohen (Jace Everett. Sam Lewis, The Levees) on guitars, Derek Mixon (Chris Stapleton, The Levees), critically acclaimed Americana singer-songwriter Kevin Gordon on guitars, harmonica raconteur Dave P. “P Mo” Moore (Blues Old Stand), Adam Jones (Levees) on trombone, Thad Nolan on Baritone Sax, Fat Possum rising artist AJ Haynes (Seratones) on vocals, and indie singer-songwriter Bethany Raybourn on vocals, with bandmates Keith “General” Patterson and Tony Cortellini contributing guitar and organ on various tracks. Joining the Louisiana Krewe were Kevin Adams (Joe Diffie) on piano and organ and the legendary McCrary Sisters, Ann, Regina, and Debra on backing vocals. The funky title track, “Fat Man” explores the Louis Armstrong philosophy that you may not get rich playing music, but you will always be provided with everything you need. “Nothing But Love for You,” co-written with General Patterson, James Cook, and Chris Canterbury, was born out of the recent political climate that has divided the country along party lines and implores listeners to love one another despite political stances. “Shake Back Baby” begs a co-dependent lover to open their eyes and escape the drug fueled situation, while “Hold Out For Love” is a slow dancing swamp pop message to wait for the right one and the right reasons. “ “Cowboy Cadillac” is the result of Monty’s admiration of the late great Gatemouth Brown, who never let anyone confine his music to a genre. Althouh Monty saw Brown play dozens of times, the most memorable was while Russell was on crutches after a football injury. In the Louisiana summer of 1979, Russell hobbled over two miles of hot asphalt to see Gatemouth play on the side of Lake Darbonne’s Folly Beach. Upon seeing Monty struggling through the sandy beach on crutches, Brown prepared Monty a backstage picnic table. Following each song, Brown would turn to Monty and say “How you like that young man?” The song came to fruition as a result of intense study of Brown’s 2001 release “Back to Bogalusa” which shows the Stetsoned hatted Brown entering his big finned Cadillac, the same year and model Caddy Russell owns and is restoring. “Parish Pea Farm.” co-written with Louisiana gospel sensation Bradley Bridges. is a plea to an errant friend to sober up, act right and learn a lesson from incarceration. “Joy You Bring,” co-penned by Bridges and Canterbury, is an exercise in all things that provide Joy. “The Way You just Kissed Me” describes the magical moment when two people connect with a first kiss. The sole cover on the record “First You Cry” was best known around the country as a Percy Sledge hit, the song was composed by David Egan and Buddy Flett of Shreveport, both members of the great Louisiana band A-TRAIN. The song was selected as a tribute to Egan, who had passed away not long before the session, and out of respect for Flett, both of which Russell had played with and admired for years. Russell used to run sound for bands in a Grambling LA club called Fatty’s when he was still in high school. Although too young to be in the club, and he remembers both Egan and Flett in A-Train playing on the slab of Fatty’s after it had burned to ground. At the tracking session, with Russell, Cook, Cohen, and Mixon, the band was moved to tears in remembrance of Egan. Russell’s 2006 release “The Fool Monty Russell,” was produced by Texas music icon Walt Wilkins and Goose Creek Symphony fiddler Tim Lorsch and received extensive radio play on Texas and Americana radio. Russell is also the co-host of the “The Roadhouse,” a wildly popular Americana “Y’allternative” radio program in its 18th season on KXKZ 107.5, a 100,000 watt station based in Ruston, LA. He has also produced hundreds of concerts, festivals, and events over the past twenty years, including a run of highly successful productions at Rabb’s Steakhouse, a 3000 capacity venue in Ruston LA from 1999 to 2006. After having been taught to accompany himself by sliding a knife blade over an open E tuned guitar at the age of 8, and having been immersed throughout his youth with the honky-tonk, gospel, western swing, and blues music played by his Grandfather Leon Russell (not the famous one), a rural self-taught barrelhouse piano player, guitarist, and fiddler, Monty set out on a musical journey that has lasted over 30 years. Since the mid 1990’s, he has played over 200 dates each year in theatres, listening rooms, festivals, honky-tonks, churches, and any other place people listen to music. In the last few years, Monty has produced debut albums for several Northern Louisiana artists such as Bethany Raybourn, Bradley Bridges, Wade Reeves, Chris Canterbury, Bo Smith, Dave P Moore, Beaux Atkins, and Victor Abendeno, all who have received widespread radio play and are now touring throughout the south to support these albums. He also will release a compilation of songs from the artists he has produced as well as unreleased tracks from his recent sessions on his LA 818 label. Over the past twenty years, he has shared the stage with the likes of Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakam, Billy Currington, Chris Knight, Pin Monkey, Jerry Jeff Walker, Paul Thorn, Charlie Robison, Gary Allan, Little Feat, Merle Haggard, Reckless Kelly, Blues Traveler, Irma Thomas, Marcia Ball, Charlie Daniels, Confederate Railroad, Bucky Covington, Robert Earl Keen, Delbert McClinton, Kevin Fowler, David Alan Coe, Pat Green, Paul Thorn, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Del McCoury, Ricky Skaggs, Doug Stone, Travis Tritt, Radney Foster, Reckless Kelly, John Anderson, Kevin Gordon, Del McCoury, Marty Stuart, Dash Riprock, The Cadillac Three, Charlie Daniels, Jason Boland, Sunny Sweeny, Dylan Scott, Robert Finley, Jack Ingram, The Ace in the Hole Band, The Bottle Rockets, and many more.

Mar 23 J. EDWARDS
Join us at the Griffin for an acoustic lunch with J. Edwards. This event is FREE. Born in Arkansas, J Edwards spent most of his childhood traveling the states with his evangelist father and singing family. He grew up performing a variety of instruments, depending on what was needed at the nightly church services. After touring on his own within the Christian music industry, J Edwards found solace in playing the blues at small clubs and juke joints across the country. A catalog of songs and a raspy singing voice were his tools in forging a long-term career as a singer-songwriter in Nashville. The new music scene shaped his genre into something between country-rock and blues; from ballads to rockers, his tunes evolved beyond his small town roots. In Edwards' most recent project "Heroes," he honors veterans, active military and their families with what he considers his most meaningful and important piece of work yet. Always working on the next installment, J Edwards can be found in the studio, writing room or on tour.

Mar 29 Mental Health and the Church
Mental Health and the Church conference is being offered free of charge by College Avenue Church of Christ for both its church members and to the community at large.

This important conference will:

1) Address head-on the mental health issue in our community and provide awareness around the fact that so many people in our communities, in our churches, in our friends and families are dealing with or will eventually experience depression, anxiety, or other ongoing mental struggles
2) Provide help and hope to those suffering and how we can be a voice of hope and direction
3) Provide help and hope to those who are trying to help loved ones but don't know how

We hope that those attending the conference will walk away a better understanding about mental health issues and the kind of support that is needed to provide transforming love, support, and hope to those suffering.

The struggle is real: Half of all adults in the U.S. will develop mental illness in their lifetime. It’s time to break the silence about this and learn about depression, anxiety and other ongoing "invisible" struggles so that we can recognize and offer hope and support to those around us who need it.

No one gets better alone. No family should walk through a mental health crisis alone. We all need a support system of family, friends, mental health professionals, support groups, and a faith community in challenging times.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Joe Brumfield, Ed.D., Professor of Bible and Marriage & Family Therapy at Harding University will lead the sessions. Dr. Brumfield has been at Harding University since 1992. He has served as youth minister, campus minister, and pulpit minister in various congregations for over 30 years. He is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and does marriage and family seminars around the country. Dr. Brumfield has graduate degrees in Theology and Counseling, as well as a Doctorate in Education in the area of Family Relations and Child Development.

CONFERENCE SCHEDULE:
- Friday, March 29: 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM
- Saturday, March 30: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
- Sunday, March 31: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
(Class, Worship, Potluck, Short Wrap-up Session)

CHILDCARE: Childcare will be provided. Please let the church office know if you will be bringing your children so we can staff accordingly (870-862-1552).

Mar 30 RANDY RUTHERFORD
Strumming on a guitar at the age 14 and singing in local venues by age 16, country music singer/ songwriter, Randy Rutherford , recently wrapped up 4 new singles. His single "Coming to Get Ya" gives listeners a glimpse of his country background and energetic stage performances. Named after Alabama's lead singer Randy Owen, Randy Rutherford credits his parents for cultivating an enriched upbringing that included various types of music. When choosing a name, Randy's parents decided the name Randy would be perfect since Alabama was and still is his mother's favorite band. Randy's mother still has all the band's cassettes and CD's. Honing in on country music, Randy attributes much of his success to his grandfather's thoughtful and consistent coaching. " My granddaddy taught me my first guitar chords greatly influencing my love for country music. Though he's gone now, his memory inspires me to perform the best I can and that means a lot to me." Randy is undeniably country and vocalizes a smooth countrysound blended with traditional elements. Randy always steps up to the microphone comfortable and confident. Fans always know what they're going to get - pure country and a lot of heart.

Mar 31 Mental Health and the Church
